The following lines show the abstract of the article called “Fundamental Aspects of the Anaerobic Threshold”, which was written in Spanish under the title “Aspectos Fundamentales del Umbral Anaeróbico”, by José V. Subiela D., and published in VITAE (Academia Biomédica Digital), Enero – Marzo 2007 N°30, ISSN 1317-987X
“The concept of anaerobic threshold was proposed by Wasserman (1,2) in 1964, in order to express the loss of linear relationship between pulmonary ventilation and the workload and/or the oxygen consumption, a fact that coincides with lactic acid accumulation in blood and the onset of metabolic acidosis. For years, different authors (3,4, 5,6,7,12) have enriched significantly such concept and expand it into a field of application in athletes, as well as in nonsport healthy people and patients, specifically those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and ischemic cardiophathy. Nowadays, anaerobic threshold determination should be included in a regular routine of physical evaluation of athletes and healthy population, as well as in stress tests in pulmonary and cardiac patients in order to plan successful individual training or rehabilitation programs.“
